Internet providers came together against ‘copyright violations’

The internet service providers have made an agreement to fight against the copyright issue. Under the agreement, the service providers will send six warning messages or electronic alerts to the customers who will violate the copyright.
According to a news release, the warning message will be sent to those customer(s) from whose account the distribution and the downloading of the illegal movies, television shows or music takes place.
According to the factsheet of the program, if the customers who will be indulging in such an illegal activity will receive repeated alerts from their ISPs and then the company will reduce its internet speed and after sometime its internet access will be blocked. Such persons will be not able to use their internet till they discuss the matter with the service provider. However, the internet subscriber can also request for an independent review before the restriction.
This program of the internet service providers is backed by the trade groups representing the entertainment and media industries. The supporters include Motion Picture Association of America, the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Cable & Telecommunications Association.
In an alert statement, Randal Milch, Verizon general counsel said, “The alert system is designed to notify and educate customers, not to penalize them and is aimed at informing customers about copyright laws and encouraging them to obtain content from the many legal sources that exist.”
According to a report of International Chamber of Commerce, a London based consulting firm which was commissioned in February, the piracy business which includes piracy of digital movies, music and software, costs around $30 billion to $75 billion.
