1,000 PlayBook tablets to be recalled by RIM

The confirmation about this recall was also given by RIM in a statement made to CNET. The company also added that only few of the defective units which were sold to the customers had crossed the distribution stage.
Defective devices unable to load software during initial set up
In a statement made by the company about the recall of the defective units, it said, "RIM determined that approximately 1,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets (16GB) were shipped with an OS build that may result in the devices being unable to properly load software upon initial set-up.”
The source further added, “The majority of the affected devices are still in the distribution channel and haven't reached customers. RIM is working to replace the affected devices."

Though the company's statement mentioned the recall numbers to be approximately 1,000 however, some other sources from the company have suggested the figure to be around 900.
As the information provided by the memo of the company, the buggy lot of PlayBooks were shipped to Staples. There have been no indications from RIM till now about the process to be followed for recollecting the faulty parts.
It’s not yet clear whether the customers who received the faulty devices would be contacted directly or not. However, a list is published by Engadget which has 935 serial numbers of the defective tablets. These serial numbers are meant to be checked by the PlayBook owners themselves and inform in case they have a defective unit.
