Microsoft acknowledged that there is a serious vulnerability in all versions of its web browser Internet Explorer, on Wednesday.

The same can be exploited by attackers by inducing users to visit a particular engineered website, after which the attacker can control the computer of the user.

Microsoft said that they are investigating the vulnerability and have urged the users to use its Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET), until they come out with a more permanent solution.

EMET 2.0 is available as a free download, from the company’s website. Microsoft also provided instructions on configuring the EMET in the linked security advisory.

Microsoft Corporation is preparing to unveil its own slate at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in January 2011, according to several media reports.

The project has yet not been officially announced by Microsoft, but market analysts believe that the new device from the software giant will rev up competition in the tablet market where Apple's iPad dominates.

New slate: upgrade over previous version?
Experts believe that the new tablet will be an improvement over Microsoft's earlier version which
fell short of the promises made by Steve Ballmer, the chief executive officer of the company.

In 2010, an HP model device was launched but it turned out to be business oriented machine designed for vertical market.

The next version of Microsoft’s web browser, Internet Explorer 9 (IE 9), will allow users to decide for themselves which sites should not track them while browsing on the net. IE 9 is expected to be launched early next year, and this feature called ‘Tracking Protection’ will be a part of it.

Microsoft’s vice-president Dean Hachamovitch and chief privacy officer Peter Cullen told the press that tracking protection list will be an optional feature, and Microsoft will not provide any list of tracking websites. Third parties will be allowed to provide the list to users. So, privacy advocacy groups or consumer protection groups or even individuals may provide these lists.

Once downloaded, these lists will be updated on a weekly basis through a subscription mechanism.
