German produced bean sprouts were the possible source of the E.coli outbreak that killed 30 people and made more than 3000 people ill in Europe, says German health authorities.

The authorities have made the announcement after months of investigation that led to an organic farm in Bienenbeuttel in northern Germany.

Reinhard Burger, head of the Robert Koch Institute for disease control and prevention stated, “It’s the sprouts,” adding, “It was possible to narrow down epidemiologically the cause of the outbreak of the illness to the consumption of sprouts.”

At first, authorities believed Spanish cucumbers as the likely source but when proved wrong, they shifted their focus on bean sprouts, as earlier warnings also indicated it as the possible source.

Two new drugs may increase the chances of survival for patients with advance melanoma – a fatal form of skin cancer, finds doctors after conducting separate studies.

The findings of the studies were published online at the ‘New England Journal of Medicine’ and shown at the annual meeting of American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago.

One of the drugs named Vemurafenib, targets gene mutation observed in almost half of all melanoma cases, and the other Yervoy (ipilimumab) boosts the body’s immune system to fight the disease.

Although they are not a cure but the experts believe that these may help a patient live two to several months more than the expected lifespan.
