German produced bean sprouts were the possible source of the E.coli outbreak that killed 30 people and made more than 3000 people ill in Europe, says German health authorities.
The authorities have made the announcement after months of investigation that led to an organic farm in Bienenbeuttel in northern Germany.
Reinhard Burger, head of the Robert Koch Institute for disease control and prevention stated, “It’s the sprouts,” adding, “It was possible to narrow down epidemiologically the cause of the outbreak of the illness to the consumption of sprouts.”
At first, authorities believed Spanish cucumbers as the likely source but when proved wrong, they shifted their focus on bean sprouts, as earlier warnings also indicated it as the possible source.
