Research in Motion (RIM) has promised the Government of Indonesia that it will make the porn sites inaccessible through its smart phones, within the next four days. The company has also accepted the demand of installing servers within the country.

Indonesia, the country with largest Muslim population has announced its plan to ask all internet service providers, to block access to porno sites.

In August, the country announced that it had blocked nearly 4 million pornographic sites. Tifatul Sembiring, Communications and Information Technology Minister of the country condemned the visit of porn star, Tera Patrick, in October last year.

Now the same minister has gained success by RIM, agreeing to block porn content. The move by the RIM has unruffled the advocates of free speech.

RIM had few choices

A report by Berkman Center for Internet Security of Harvard University showed that the web sites of dissident media and human rights groups have often become the target of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

Such attacks have been more frequent in countries like China, Burma, Egypt, Israel, Mexico, Iran, Russia, USA and Tunisia.

DDoS attacks similar to those which were targeted at the sites of companies like Amazon, Visa, PayPal and denied services to WikiLeaks are becoming more and more popular, thereby threatening free speech on the Internet.

All about a DDoS attack

The government in UK is planning to enforce some kind of a restriction on the porn available on the internet.

With this aim in mind, the Minister for Communications is going to ask all Internet Service Providers (ISP’s) to block all porn sites and then allow user requests after verifying their age.

The idea for blocking porn sites on the net was given by Conservative Party MP, Claire Perry, who started her call for greater regulation of the internet, citing her primary concern ‘as a mother’.
